Canoe Engagement Adventure
The canoe seems like second nature to Sue and Auburn and I’m so grateful I got to go to this incredible spot by canoe, with them. They wanted to feel more at ease in front of a camera before their wedding and I had mentioned picking a spot they felt comfortable in. I said I was up for an adventure and they fully took advantage of that. We drove out to Pimisi Lake with Sue’s 16 ft fibre glass canoe, to do the Voyageur route up the Mattawa River that she usually races.
The river is peppered with beautiful/free/rough camping spots and towering rock face. It was nice to be the deadweight cargo in the middle of the canoe, so I could take it all in. We arrived at the shoots and hiked a little to avoid the kids cliff jumping (shudder) into the black and infinitely deep water below. It occured to me that my drybag would do nothing to save my gear if it was just going to sink down into the abyss.
We spent a few hours exploring, climbing rocks and drinking a very nice bottle of wine. I was overwhelmed by how beautiful this place is and a little sheepish I’d never been there before. People like Auburn and Sue make this work a total treat in a place like Northern Ontario.
Talon Chutes are an effing trip! Check it out by entering off Pimisi Lake and heading up along the Mattawa River.
