Homestead Hand Built Wedding
This homestead in Callander is one of the most beautiful spaces I’ve ever been in. All because of Susan and Auburn’s skill and vision. When I met them at their home last winter, I was floored by the design and feeling of their home and property. I think we spent most of that meeting talking about the projects they had planned or completed. They learned most of what they needed to know by teaching themselves.
Susan’s family has owned the property for a few generations, but together they elevated it to incredible place for gathering or solitude. Their wedding was a trial by fire for hosting a large group and it was seamless. Every element of their wedding felt considered the way every corner of their home and property did too.
I arrived to the homestead for a few getting ready shots before we walked the trails they had cleared for first look. Sue and Auburn were getting ready in opposite sides of the house. Their wedding parties floated back and forth between brides… such a tight group doesn’t really have sides anyway.
We walked into the woods for first look, where Auburn’s amigos locked arms in front of her in a red rover formation. Sue did not suffer this fooling around, and parted the line with a hand gesture. It was an overwhelmingly beautiful moment, but that was much of the day. Stunning women, loving and expressive guests, in the most perfect location.
The ceremony was under an arch they built themselves. The reception was around the house they designed and finished. The dinner was under a tent with a clear roof, so we could look up at the tree canopy. Beside it was a palace of an outhouse… also designed and built by the two of them.
I learn a lot about about couples listening to the speeches made about them. They confirmed to me how perfect Auburn and Sue are together. The way they meet challenges and work together. The way they love their friends and family. Their patience for each other. The intention with which they live their lives and the goals they have together. How much they each love adventure and seek it together. What else could you want.
They’ve planned to open up their homestead as a retreat space. Check out Gather ‘n’ Grow on Instagram or Airbnb.
